Championing Sustainability In The Workplace

There are many solutions that businesses can implement to reduce their impact on the environment. Plastic Free July is being celebrated this month, with businesses being encouraged to ditch single-use plastics. The initiative was set up by the Plastic Free Foundation, who have made it their mission to free the world of plastic waste.

Implementing internal changes, such as reducing waste, using renewable solutions and effectively recycling, is the best way for businesses to become more sustainable. Business owners should champion sustainability in the workplace as it will have a positive impact on their business, their employees, and the local environment. Organisations can achieve sustainability by conducting their affairs without negatively impacting the environment around them, the local community or society.

With the government wanting to achieve net zero emissions by the year 2050, companies will soon be told to significantly reduce their impact on the environment. It is therefore imperative that businesses across the country start thinking about how they can reduce their emissions and become a more sustainable business.

Business owners should champion sustainability in the workplace as it can have a positive impact on their business, their employees, and the local environment.

At Bespoke Merchant Solutions, we are taking small steps to try and become more sustainable. We recognise that it is important for our business to contribute towards the nations target of net zero.

Cycle to Work

We encourage our employees to avoid using their cars and instead use a bike with our cycle to work scheme. We have a bike shed available on site for secure storage and we have free bike MOT’s offered out every month.

Plastic Waste

We have provided our employees with all necessary kitchen appliances and reusable utensils so they can bring their own lunch, in an attempt to avoid the unnecessary plastic waste from store-bought meal deals. It is estimated that the UK produce 5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year and this includes 15 million single use plastic bottles. We encourage all our employees to have reusable bottles with them, as well as providing glasses and mugs.

Small Steps Towards Sustainability in the Workplace...

At BMS, we strive to be a leading example to show how a business can succeed sustainably. We are always looking for more ways to improve our sustainability.

We know a sustainable business model will help us save costs in the long-run, while helping our planet. We are encouraging our customers and employees to be more sustainable. Businesses can start by making eco-friendly everyday choices, starting with the steps below.

What Steps To Take

We recommend beginning your sustainability journey with small steps in the right direction; embedding sustainable solutions into your organisational practices and eventually incorporating them within your workplace culture. Simple solutions could include:

  • LED energy efficient lights
  • Insulating buildings properly
  • Installing smart energy monitors
  • Using renewable energy from a local supplier
  • Recycling points
  • Providing reusable items such as cutlery, mugs and plates
  • Going paper-free

Organisations should then focus on how they can be more sustainable in the long-term. Creating a sustainable business model should be at the top of every business owners’ list and we all need to start planning for a better future. Although long-term solutions can be more expensive, both your business and the environment can benefit from them. Some examples include:

  • Using Electric-Vehicles
  • Waste Disposal
  • Habitat Restorations & Replanting Trees
  • Ensuring your products are sustainable
  • Collaborations with local organisations
